Troy House is in the centre of the village of Puddletown, which is 3 miles east of Dorchester, the county town of Dorset. There are plenty of well-known department stores, supermarkets, high street chainstores and up market shops in Dorchester as well as a good range of Indian and Chinese restaurants. The village of Poundbury, which Prince Charles designed, is nearby and worth a look around. In Puddletown the village shop offers a post office, off licence, newsagents, butchers and general store all under one roof. There are plenty of nice country pubs in the local villages with good food menus, you are on holiday after all!! Troy House is ideally situated to visit the local beaches, the shopping centres of Poole and Bournemouth, and to explore Swanage and the Purbeck hills. This area of Dorset was made famous by Thomas Hardy who set his novels in Wessex. Puddletown is known as “Weatherbury” in his books. Opposite Troy House is St. Mary’s church, which featured in “Far From The Madding Crowd,” where Sergeant Troy spent the night in the church porch. Hardy's family were Puddletown natives, and the church gallery was celebrated by Hardy in "Under the Greenwood Tree."
